During the month of April, dentists nationwide are encouraging patients to come in for an oral exam and cancer screening.<\/p>\n<p>There are a wide variety of effective screening tools out there. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clintontownshipfamilydental.com\/our-services.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Salzberg-Siegel\u2019s Clinton Township office<\/a>, we screen patients with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oraldna.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OralDNA<\/a>. What <strong>OralDNA<\/strong> lets us do is screen patients for a variety of conditions, including <strong>periodontal disease<\/strong>, <strong>oral cancer<\/strong>, and even <strong>HPV<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Why <strong>HPV<\/strong>? Because <strong>oral cancer <\/strong>caused by <strong>HPV<\/strong> is on the rise. Identifying <strong>HPV<\/strong> in patients helps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clintontownshipfamilydental.com\/meet-the-dentists.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Salzberg-Siegel<\/a> identify those who may be at increased risk so that a customized treatment plan can be made.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC<\/a> has estimated that as many as 80% of patients may come into contact with at least one of the 120 different types of <strong>HPV<\/strong>, often without knowing about it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oral Cancer Facts and Statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every year, <strong>oral cancer<\/strong> kills more people nationwide than cervical or skin cancer. What\u2019s more, only half of all patients diagnosed will live more than five years after diagnosis. The most common risk factors are tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, consistent sunlight exposure, habitual cheek or lip biting, or poorly fitting denture. However, 25% of oral cancers involve patients with no risk factors at all. That\u2019s often where HPV factors in.<\/p>\n<p>Signs of oral cancer include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tA sore that bleeds easily or does not heal.<br \/>\n\u2022\tA color change of the oral tissues.<br \/>\n\u2022\tA lump, thickening, rough spot, crust, or small, eroded area.<br \/>\n\u2022\tPain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never been screened for <strong>oral cancer <\/strong>or <strong>HPV<\/strong>, there\u2019s no better time for a screening at <strong>Dr. Salzberg-Siegel\u2019<\/strong>s office than <strong>National Oral Cancer Health Month<\/strong>.
